With many thickness gauges on the market, it was clear that none of them truly satisfied the battery manufacturer’s needs. Either the solutions failed to deliver the measurement accuracy required, or they were cumbersome to use and required constant calibration or they were simply unreliable because of inconsistent measurements when confronted with varying process and ambient conditions.

It’s All About Quality
As the LiB industry pushes the boundaries of producing more compact cells with greater performance, electrode thickness is becoming more and more important. Obtaining a reliable thickness measurement, one that the operators believe in and trust, is critical -- especially when used for control feedback to the Roll Press.
A Measurement You Can Trust and Rely On
Analyzing the gauging systems on the market that measure electrode thickness, we found that most of them were not accepted or adopted by the operators of the Roll Press (calender) lines. Operators did not trust the gauge measurements because they fluctuated with roll changes, ambient temperature, vibration and other environmental conditions.
Installing a thickness gauge that is rejected by operators is ultimately a bad investment. Not only is CAPEX wasted, but the burden related to the installed measurement system is multifold: the time spent on installing it, the time spent on training operators, the time spent on trying to get the system to function as expected and other time-intensive tasks. You can also factor in the waste and scrap generated during the set-up and testing periods.
